Cubic yard calculator
Convert length, width and depth into cubic yards for ordering topsoil, fill, mulch, gravel or concrete.
Volume
How to use it
Enter the length and width of the area in feet and the depth in inches. The calculator gives the volume in cubic yards, the unit most landscape suppliers and concrete plants sell by, plus cubic feet and cubic meters.
For a specific material, the dedicated calculators also give bag counts and weights: concrete, mulch, gravel and soil.
How it's calculated
- Cubic feet = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12).
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27, because a cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft.
| Depth | Area one cubic yard covers |
|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft |
| 12 in | 27 sq ft |
| Unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| 1 cubic yard | 27 cubic feet |
| 1 cubic yard | 0.765 cubic meters |
| 1 cubic meter | 1.308 cubic yards |
Tips
- Round up when you order. Bulk suppliers usually sell in whole or half yards, and running short means a second delivery fee.
- Loose materials settle. Soil and mulch compact after spreading and watering, so many people order about 10% extra.
- Odd shapes: work out the area first with the square footage calculator, then multiply by the depth in feet and divide by 27.
